ABOUT THE ARTIST
"My work sits at the intersection of precise observation and painterly expression. As a practitioner of Impressionistic Realism, I am less interested in a literal transcription of a scene than I am in capturing the 'vibration' of light across a surface—whether that be the humid atmosphere of a bayou or river, the rhythmic shadows of a cityscape, or the quiet geometry of a studio still life.
Grounded in the discipline of painting from life, I utilize the rich materiality of oil paint to bridge the gap between reality and memory. My background in photography informs my composition, allowing me to find the 'decisive moment' in the everyday. Each brushstroke is an intentional balance of form and fluidity, inviting the viewer to see the extraordinary beauty hidden within the ordinary world."
Biography
Barry Dominick is a Dallas-based oil painter dedicated to the timeless traditions of en plein air and studio painting. An Associate Member of the Oil Painters of America, Barry’s transition from a forty-year career in finance to a full-time art practice in 2024 reflects a lifelong commitment to the visual arts.
His journey began with the mechanical eye of a camera—from childhood Polaroids to 35mm film—which honed his deep understanding of light and perspective. Today, he translates that photographic sensitivity into the tactile medium of oil. From expansive landscapes to intimate still lifes, Barry’s work is characterized by a sophisticated use of color and a signature impressionistic touch that captures the fleeting essence of his subjects. When not in his Dallas home studio, he can be found capturing the changing light of the American landscape.
